Blades Brandished by RadioJane Blades Brandished by RadioJane
This was a fun one to color, and I did some experimenting with a screentone program I have, I'll probably use it more in the future. The background took some wrestling around with, I couldn't decide on the kind of hue I wanted, and decided on a greenish-grey, feeling it had the right balance of making Blades pop and not clashing with his colors too much. The retro "surprise flash" was something I wanted to try out for fun, any feedback on how you think it works with the overal look would be much appreciated! I also had fun coloring in little Dani in his hand, I had to figure out how to keep true to her outfit colors while also making her noticable (but she's so small I dunno if it worked XD; ).

You can find the black and white image (along with my ramblings of how I adore this character XD) here: [link]

Comments and questions are always appreciated, thanks for looking! ^_^

Your colouring style is mesmerizing! I am loving how this looks! Definitely a different taste of style, and I like it!
One thing with styles I don't understand is I don't know how to critique them without looking ignorant, because I'm not sure how they're supposed to work.
I can tell this uses many traditional means but the shading and the gradients make this unique.

One thing for sure: I love it!
Another thing, though, is I'm almost confused by it, too.
The shading technique "from black -> dark colour -> bright colour -> almost white -> dots" in some portions of Blade's body (I'm lookin' at the shoulders and whatnot) make it seem almost as if the natural colours are playing chicken with the utter darkness and neither one has given up. It looks totally awesome, but seeing as I've never seen this technique before I have to say it doesn't seem natural.

It doesn't take away from the model seeing as I can clearly see each part of Blade's frame, but it's definitely an eye-popper.

Overall I like this a lot. I'll have to see the rest of your gallery, I believe. Then maybe it'll all make sense to me XD

Also, you asked about the "surprise flash", in which I say "It's okay." It helps bring awareness to the empty space beside it, which isn't terrific since that's the boring part. You would expect some hazard to loom to the right because of it. The piece would work just fine without it, that way it doesn't seem like Blades is alarmed by empty space but instead just concerned about what is up ahead. That being the viewers job to imagine.

Woah--such a long comment! :iconhappycryingplz:

Thank you so much for the praise--and critique! Hmm how to explain my chaotic coloring style... Well, it's usually pretty much that--chaotic, though I've been working to wrangle it in and make it behave XD I've always loved strong contrasts, and I'm always observing the stranger ways that shadows and 'flat' colors interact, sometimes there isn't a middleground between them. I also like to keep in mind that there can always be several light sources coming from any angle, at varying strengths--which in turn lets me get away with quite a bit XD Some call it crazy, I call it "artistic liscence" :iconbadassplz: *imma dork*

And I agree, the surprise flash needs something in the background to explain it being there, a friend even recommended that I add flames or something, but I can never bring myself to go back and go over a work once I've posted it XD; I was trying to go for the drama of having a big, white space, usually the amount of overbearing emptiness lends itself quite well to my works, but the surprise flash took away from it in this case.

Thank you so much for the thoughtful comment, it mean a lot to me!

I used to draw manga when I was younger, but these days I'm working in a more realistic/Western style--and I do hope to get a job in the comic book industry when I finish school! ^_^
Haha thank you! Who ever thought that Blades could be in the same sentence as Badass :XD:

Eeeeeeeiii! Blades honey! I love how you're portrayed him here. The really solid darks give it a really edgy feel. I think your use of texture and screentones is really successful. Well done!

Yeah, placement of the surprise flash is a little problematic. Normally you'd put it near the eye/browline but his shoulder is in the way here. Maybe if it was moved up a bit and made smaller?

Also if there something compositionally that hinted at what he was looking ate/being surprised by that would help. Maybe some swirls of wind from that direction? Just a hit of something oncoming? It would also help complete the eye movement in the piece, spanning the gap between the dark curing objects on the ground and Blades's head in the center.

Hope that helps?

Thank you so much! I'm glad you like how the textures and screetone mix, there was a lot of experimenting going on. :XD:

I agree, making the flash either smaller or just taking it out all together would be an improvement :) I was thinking it would give the piece a nice pop, but Blades's crazy orange color scheme did most of the work anyways in that department XD

I was /so/ close to putting flames off in the direction he's looking in, but I've always been a sucker for having big spaces of white to create drama, and I was also worried about things getting too clustered with all the chunky shadows in the rocks, so I settled with putting cuts of screentone in the sky; though they're so light they're not that noticable :XD:;

Thank you for the advice! It's always a great help to recieve insider thoughts from other artists :iconbowplz:

ooooh, I like big bits of negative space too. Could be something subtle, like a cloud/smoke formation or something... not sure!

Either way, great work and I'm glad my input was useful. ^_^

Lol if I had to nitpick I would say the "shock flash: seems a little out of place. Kinda looks like his shoulder is exploding.

Yeah, I /knew/ it was gonna come out looking odd, and it's probably way too bright in comparison to everything else XD; It's something I'll have to approach with more caution in the future for sure. Thank you for being honest, it makes me strive to improve my work!
